Project Background
In 2009, YCI staff worked with young woman at HMP Downview to pilot a project that looked to using a global perspective to allow young people to better understand the roots of youth crime in the UK. In the past, YCI has worked with YMCA England’s Offenders Service Unit to deliver this work. YCI is now looking for local YMCA partners to deliver this project.
Project Summary
- 10 approx young people to discuss global issues
- Young people to explore similarities and differences to root causes
- Compose creative young people led solutions to tackle problems
- Build authoritative evidence demonstrating the added value of Global Yout Work
- Assess youth work programmes and interventions in light of the evidence in both domestic and international perspective
City of Sunderland YMCA took on the challenge of delivering this project. In 2010 we ran 4 workshops with approx 15 young people who lived in the YMCA.
The 4 workshops consisted of
- To explore local aspect and understanding of gang related and criminal violence
- To explore the global aspect of gang related and criminal violence
- To analyse the links between the structural reasons behind gang-related and criminal violence in both contexts
- Build on solutions to plan appropriate advocacy actions
In 2011 we were given the opportunity to run our project again, however this time in a YOI.
November 2011 we ran the project again at Deerbolt Young Offenders Institute. We worked with 10 young people and gained a real insight into the life a YOI inmate. Y Care International has now offered us funding for a third time to run this project, this will be taking place in March 2012 at Deerbolt again.
