Sunderland MP Grilled over welfare changes….
YOUNG people got the chance to grill an MP over benefit changes that many fear could leave them homeless. The event, at the YMCA in Toward Road, was part of Welfare Action Week and saw Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott face tough questions from teenage critics.YMCA worker Jax Cadger said: “In times like this, with the recession, young people have a lot of questions that might not have been addressed by MPs.” Welfare Action Week aimed to highlight the Government’s proposed welfare changes to housing benefit which, it is feared, could push thousands of people out of social housing…..

Sunderland and Scotland goalkeeper Gordon’s the prize guy
BLACK Cats goalkeeper Craig Gordon provided a safe pair of hands as he handed out trophies at a football tournament for homeless people. The Homeless Under-25 Football Shield saw teams from charity Centrepoint and three other local hostels take to the field to raise awareness of the problem of people living on the streets. The Scotland international presented the winners’ shield to residents and staff from the Sunderland City YMCA, who lifted the trophy after outplaying squads from Gentoo Sunderland, the Salvation Army and Centrepoint……..

Music & Performing Arts – Groups. Mad House Media is Highly Commended
Mad House Media is Highly Commended in the Music & Performing Arts – Groups category at the 2011 Sunderland Young Achievers Awards.
Mad House Media began at the YMCA when a group of young people approached staff with the fantastic idea to create a media project.
The group organised open days to recruit new members to the project and visited other community groups to discuss the possibility of partnership work. They have also achieved a module in the Learning Power Award course which is a City and Guilds qualification in Personal Development. The young people have created a string of inspirational short films, slide shows, websites and forums for all to see .They have created a new DVD showcasing the YMCA and some of the work they do.
Successful in achieving a grant from the Youth Opportunity Fund, this talented group of young people deserve to be recognised.
YMCA homeless get a surprise gift
Homeless young people facing the festive season alone in Sunderland have been given an unexpected Christmas gift. Students from Hylton Red House Academy and the Red House Community Show Stoppers joined forces to raise funds for the city’s YMCA.
