The Rewards of Volunteering
Volunteering not only works for those receiving help but also those who do different kinds of volunteering acts. Truth be told, when faced with the question of Why Is Volunteering Important; there are many reasons why it is beneficial to all concerned.
Firstly, when we volunteer our time for a good cause; the rewards we reap are far greater than any promotion we could get from work; or good grades we get from school.
Another reason on Why Is Volunteering Important is that we imbibe in others the spirit of generosity – of giving back to others; even strangers, all the good things we have received in life. In one way or another, donating your time to volunteer will eventually pay off through building a network for yourself, using the volunteer experience as part of your resume for a job application, or getting hired at the place you volunteer.
Who knows, you may even have a little fun while volunteering and having fun is always a good thing.
Muhammad Ali, the former heavyweight champion of the world, described the importance of volunteering as, “Service to others is the payment you make for your space here on Earth.” A person who unselfishly donates his or her time and resources in helping their fellow man is fulfilling a commitment.
Given that Sunderland, and the entire country, is facing one of the toughest economic situations we have seen in decades. It’s sometimes difficult for us to do the best job that we can and offer quality services using paid staff members only. They are dedicated and have the heart, but we can’t do it alone. It’s a massive job considering the growing number of people who need shelter, food, and clothing and updated training skills. That’s where volunteers can play a big role.
You may feel that you don’t have the time to volunteer because of all of the demands on your time already. But just giving four hours per month can be a rewarding experience. Not only for the person you help, but for yourself as well. Our volunteers at Sunderland YMCA are friends and partners in our mission.
Boost your career - A survey by Reed of 200 of the UK’s top businesses showed that 73% of employers would recruit a candidate with volunteering experience over one without and 94% of employees who volunteered to learn new skills had benefited either by getting their first job, improving their salary, or being promoted.
